About

Hi, my name is Jon and I am some kind of freedom-hating programmer/free software enthusiast. I don't really hate freedom...but in my job I deal with, use, and create a lot of non-free solutions while I develop in-house software and systems and things.
My affair with technology started long ago: I have loved the internet and computers ever since I first got my hands on a computer, which was around 1997 or '98.
There's a little more info on the first post about getting into the web and such here: How I got started.

I am also into offroading (though I have sold my Jeep, and cigars (and more recently, pipes).

As a side note, my thoughts and opinions expressed here on this site are my own and are not those of my employer (or anyone else).
I am not a lawyer, or a doctor, and anything expressed here is solely my opinion.
I also do not have any insider trading knowledge at all, so definitely don't take it as such.

Topics

Over the course of the years, the content matter has varied wildly on any of the websites or blogs that I have made--mostly because I never stick to one subject for very long, and I have a short attention span.

I am not online nearly as much as I have been in the past, but I also don't really have much desire to be. Life is much too busy, between work and the kids and whatever else.
At the point of this writing, when I DO update my primary focal points tend to swing randomly between the following topics:

  • FLOSS, I love Free (as in Freedom) software and Linux and consider myself an "enthusiast." (although not a zealot or anything of that sort) See my list of favorite Linux distros. I like free software because I feel it is usually better than other software--it is not a question of morality for me.
  • American Politics (kind of a 'liberty' theme in general, I suppose)
  • Offroading/Jeeps (see my jeep site, where I catalogue info and such)
  • Random other topics kind of floating around that strikes my interest: comedy, general tech, ...other.

A renewed subject I may discuss from time to time is programming--as this is what I do for a living.
Contradictory to the previous paragraph, I do mostly Windows programming in-house for the company I work for.
It does pay the bills, though, and I have managed to move away from using MS VB6 and .NET. I try to sneak in
some Linux programming, or cross-platform stuff when I get a chance--we have recently moved to a cross-platform
compiler that opens a lot of doors. There's a little more about my programming history on the projects page.
